The Truth Finders are dedicated to distributing the TRUTH to TMMK Team Members so that they may make an informed decision about the UAW.  We believe that the majority of TMMK team members are intelligent people therefore, we are confident that once you learn the facts you will agree that TMMK should remain UNION FREE!

The union organizers are complaining about the new Crossdock facility and about the declining employment levels here at TMMK.  The union organizers claim that the UAW could stop declining employment levels but yet the UAW recently announced that it is slashing its own staff due to declining membership.  The UAW cannot even provide job security to its own staff much less its members.  So why are the union organizers once again trying to deceive TMMK team members?  Of course they are just trying to create more disharmony and discontent in an effort to further their corrupt agenda.  So let’s take a look at what the UAW is doing about outsourcing and employment levels at the Big 3 and other UAW plants.

The UAW has agreed to allow the Big 3 to eliminate over 50,000 jobs through attrition, buyouts and OUTSOURCING TO LOWER WAGE SUPPLIERS.  The new UAW contract signed in September 2003 allows Chrysler to eliminate 18.2% of union jobs.  GM can cut 12% and Ford/Visteon 11.4%.  During the 1999-2003 contract period, Chrysler cut 12.6% of union jobs and GM cut 17.2%.  The new agreement also allows for the sale or closure of up to nine of Chrysler’s parts plants. www.freep.com/money/autonews/uaw21x_20040221.htm          http://archives.econ.utah.edu/archives/a-list/2003w37/msg00058.htm

Chrysler’s North Jefferson Assembly plant in Detroit has had its workforce reduced by 40% over the last 3 years.  Recently Chrysler’s Jeep plant in Toledo, OH OUTSOURCED the ENTIRE BODY WELD and PAINT SHOP.  The suppliers will hire laid-off UAW workers to fill the jobs, which are expected to pay $26 per hour.  The chassis jobs, which will also be outsourced, are expected to pay $15 to $18 per hour.  Additionally, the UAW allowed Chrysler to outsource peripheral jobs such as material handling and janitorial services.   Chrysler will soon OUTSOURCE some of its powertrain operations to a new joint venture between Hyundai, Chrysler and Mitsubishi.  The new engine plant will NOT hire laid-off UAW workers.  Chrysler also expects to increase purchases from Chinese suppliers as well.  www.freep.com/money/autonews/china12_20040212.htm       Detroit Free Press  August 4, 2004

7500 workers left GM in 2002 but only 800 new workers were hired.  The UAW/GM contract has provisions to limit attrition but it has gone unenforced for years.  GM plans a 20-fold increase over the next few years in the number of auto parts it buys in China.  For example the new Chevy Equinox SUV will be assembled in Canada and will use a Chinese made engine.  Additionally the new Chevy Aveo will be built in Korea.  GM will permanently cut nearly three-quarters of its workers at its Delaware Saturn plant.   www.autonews.com/news.cms?newsID=5563   www.freep.com/money/autonews/china12_20040212.htm     www.labornotes.org/archives/2003/09/b.html    Associated Press   May 21, 2004

Ford and Visteon plan to cut their union workforces by 5% per year while Ford has doubled purchases from low cost countries such as China.  Visteon recently offered an early retirement buyout plan to workers at its Indianapolis plant.  The plan provides for a $35,000 taxable lump sum payment to those who accept the early retirement.  Retiring workers will be replaced by new hires making $14 to $18 per hour under the new two-tier wage system that the UAW negotiated with Visteon.  Visteon has also reduced the workforce at its Chesterfield, MI plant from 1600 to 850 UAW-represented workers.  www.detnews.com/2004/autosinsider/0406/28/a01-196675.htm    www.freep.com/money/autonews/china12_20040212.htm         Indianapolis Star June 30, 2004        Detroit News  April 21, 2004

The new UAW legally binding contracts with Delphi and Visteon allow for 2 tier wages, HIGHER HEALTH CARE COSTS and NO PENSION PLAN.   Delphi plans to close four plants in the US and eliminate 6000 union jobs in 2004.  As of June 30 Delphi had reduced its headcount by 4925.  Delphi and Lear. both of which have made drastic employment cuts in the U.S., are expanding production in China.  In Vandalia, Ohio Dephi has reduced its workforce from 15,000 to 8,700 in the last 7 years.  In March 2004, Lear announced that it might close a seat making plant in Auburn Hills, MI eliminating 325 jobs.     Detroit Free Press Oct 1, 2004

In June of this year, Federal-Mogul announced plans to close its Greenville, MI plant after UAW workers voted against wage and benefit concessions.  The closure would eliminate 310 jobs.     Detroit Free Press  June 15, 2004       Detroit News  June 15, 2004

Trane in Lexington recently laid-off 75 workers.  This was in addition to 80 workers who were previously laid-off.  One UAW member said the number of employees has dwindled over the years.      Lexington Herald Leader  October 5, 2004

The Big 3 have process reductions as well.  The big difference is that when they have a process reduction someone loses their job.  A recent article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed the productivity gains at the Chrysler minivan factory in Fenton, Missouri.  The article reported that “making gains hasn’t been easy or painless.  Because of the rise in productivity and cost cutting, the company has been able to eliminate 900 jobs at the plant during the last three years through departures, retirements and layoffs.  Outsourcing work to suppliers and having employees do more work have been tough issues for the union, Robertson said (Larry Robertson –President of UAW Local 110).  The union wants to protect workers, but it also understands that the plant must stay competitive, he said.  It’s a matter of holding costs down and keeping in business, he said.  You have to deal with what your competitors are doing.”

When Ford closed it Edison, NJ plant workers were given three options: retirement (if you qualify), transfer or DISMISSAL.  Overall Ford expects to TERMINATE 35,000 WORKERS by 2005.  New York Times  February 27, 2004    Detroit News  February 27, 2004

Since 1998 Caterpillar has eliminated 3000 UAW jobs.  Caterpillar also uses temporary workers who make lower wages than regular production workers.   Chicago Tribune  August 17, 2004

During the period of 1983 to 2003 unionized manufacturing jobs in the U.S. declined by 3 million.  During that same period the number of nonunion manufacturing jobs increased.  At one time 35% of private sector workers were union members.  That figure has now fallen to about 8%.  American workers are intelligent and possess a good work ethic.  They can be competitive in a global economy but not when they are burdened with a union.   Union Membership and Earnings Data Book (2003 Edition)

The union organizers keep crying that we need a “legally binding contract” to “protect” us.  Is this the kind of “legally binding contract” that you want “protecting” you?  Is this what the UAW members sent the bargaining committee to get?  Doesn’t matter -  this is what they ended up with!

Ford and the UAW have recently announced that they will crack down on UAW workers who have poor attendance.  A June 2004 union bulletin warned UAW members that Ford would no longer wait for a fifth occurrence to initiate disciplinary action.  The union bulletin stated “You could be subject to discipline on your very first absence”.  Another union bulletin stated “We have to come to work or we may not have a job to come to.”  Ford is toughening its enforcement by “cracking down on bogus doctor notes and questioning suspicious illnesses”.      www.detnews.com/2004/insiders/0409/15/d01-269746.htm

The UAW has announced that it will endorse John Kerry for President despite the fact that historically 40%+ of its members will vote Republican.  (Zogby, Luntz Research)  The UAW also announced that it will spend 2.3 million dollars of its member’s dues to run anti-Bush ads in Michigan.  If the UAW can do this, without all members consent or without regard to its member’s desires, then what else will it spend union dues on without the knowledge or consent of its members?     Of greater concern is the fact that on April 22, 2004 John Kerry suggested that he didn’t want international nameplate automobiles (Toyota, Honda, etc) to be sold in the U.S.  So the union organizers want us to support the UAW who supports John Kerry who supports shutting down TMMK?

Did you know that the union organizers are issuing threats against team members who have not signed a card?  The threats can be viewed at www.nouaw.com/threat.htm and www.nouaw.com/threat3.htm .  Do you want to be associated with the union organizers when law enforcement officials start interviewing people in regards to their illegal behavior?  Remember that their lead organizer has already PLED GUILTY to federal extortion charges.  He is currently serving a 2 year sentence in a federal prison.  If you have been threatened, lied to or harassed and you would like to revoke your union authorization card then go to www.nouaw.com/revoke.htm  and follow the procedures.

The union organizers continue to try and compare our wages to those of the Toyota workers in Japan.  What they don’t tell you is that the cost of living in Japan is 82% higher than in the U.S.   As we have said before the JAW members in Japan make about $60,000 per year in total cash compensation.  Would you rather make $60,000 per year in Japan or would you rather make $60,000 per year in the U.S.?  The JAW members in Japan only get time and a quarter for overtime whereas we get time and a half for each hour of overtime.        www.expatsite.com

The union organizers have also been claiming that our recent raises do not keep pace with the cost of living.  Of course they are lying.  During the last year our hourly pay has increased by 2.85%.  During the 2003-2004 period the cost of living increased by 2.34%.  The most recent figures show that the current rate of inflation is 2.54% (September 2004).    www.aier.org         www.inflationdata.com

They also fail to mention that the current UAW/Big 3 contract has NO RAISES for the first two years.  The new UAW/ Federal-Mogul (St Johns) contract freezes the plant’s current wage rate at $18.70 for four years.      The Detroit News  October 10, 2004

The new UAW/AK Steel contract ELIMINATES HEALTH CARE BENEFITS FOR RETIREES and increases out of pocket costs for current employees.  The contract does not provide any guarantee of a minimum work force.    Indianapolis Star   June 15, 2004
